IoTBox

The site of a young connected-devices company, prepared before its launch.

IoTBox sells solutions around connected devices, under a line that says everything about its stance: your solution is in the box. The site was built in late 2017, in the weeks before opening.

The project in detail

During that preparation the public site showed a launch page while the content was being assembled behind it. The rest sat on a commercial theme and its child theme, completed with custom fields to describe the offers without going through the text editor.

The repository recovered from the old server holds more than code: three database backups taken on 19, 20 and 21 December 2017, and the dated list of installed plugins. That is the trace of an automatic daily backup, set up alongside the site.

This page has no screenshot. The media folder was not recovered with the rest, and the database starts neither on the PHP interpreter of its era nor on a recent one. The site itself still answers at its original address under the same name and the same line, nine years on, though I have not checked who has worked on it since.

I chose to publish this page with no capture rather than reconstruct an approximate page from the theme alone. A portfolio is worth what it proves: an image made today would not show the site delivered in 2018, it would show what I decided to make of it. The facts remain: the dates, the number of commits, the installed plugins and the backups found in the repository.

Frequently asked questions

Why back up a database daily on a small site?

Because a site's value is not in its code but in its content. On IoTBox the daily backup was automatic from launch. Nine years later, those files are what still make it possible to say what the site held.

What do you do when an old project no longer starts?

You say so. IoTBox restarts neither on PHP 5.6 nor on PHP 7.4, and its media are missing: this page is published with no screenshot rather than with a reconstructed image that would not show the real site.
